Immediately following Macbeth's first meeting with the Weird Sisters in Act I, Ross and Angus meet with Macbeth and Banquo. Angus conveys Duncan's thanks for Macbeth's bravery and success in battle, and Ross tells Macbeth that Duncan has awarded him the title of Thane of Cawdor.
After announcing that his son Malcolm will be named Prince of Cumberland in Act I, Scene 4, Duncan tells Macbeth that he and others will be rewarded with titles for their loyalty. Duncan invites himself to Macbeth's castle at Inverness and tells Banquo that he believes Macbeth has no equal among the Scottish thanes. The visit from Duncan is meant to honor Macbeth, but ironically, the visit prompts the murder plot Macbeth and Lady Macbeth have only begun to consider.
