Formation of Fossil Fuels
Fossil fuels were formed during the Carboniferous Period. The Carboniferous Period occurred between 360 and 286 million years ago. During this time, organisms that died and sank to the bottom of the ocean formed layers of material called peat. Over time, the peat was converted into sedimentary rock. Eventually the sedimentary rock was compressed so much, that the water in the rock was squeezed out and the remaining substance was converted into coal, oil, and natural gas.
Fossil fuels are examples of non-renewable energy sources. This means that there is a finite supply of these substances. Fossil fuels are also damaging to the environment. Because of this, other clean and renewable energy sources such as solar, geothermal, and wind are being developed.
