There were many protests as a result of our involvement in the Vietnam War. Distrust in our government also grew.
Many people protested our involvement in Vietnam. There were many people who believed we had no acceptable reason for being there. Many college-aged people were against the war because they were being drafted to go and to fight in Vietnam. They believed there was no value in our country being there. Other people felt the Vietnam War impacted minorities and poor people more than it affected other people. Minorities and the poor were less likely to be in college. Thus, they had to go and serve when they were drafted. A college student could defer serving until after that student was finished with school.
People also began to doubt the government. The pictures people were seeing on television weren’t matching what the government was saying. The government kept saying the war was going well and would end soon. The televised news reports showed a picture that was the opposite of that. When the Tet Offensive was launched, people were convinced the government was being dishonest with them. A credibility gap developed.
Our involvement in the Vietnam War led to many protests and to more people beginning to doubt the government.
